Shwmae! We’re Poetry Wales magazine, the Welsh home of international poetry.
We’re all about celebrating exceptional poetry and supporting the people who write it.
We’re here to shine a spotlight on remarkable poetry, no matter where it comes from. We hold the door open for Welsh and Wales-based poets to share their words with the world, and we invite writers from every corner of the globe to bring their work to the Welsh page.
What are we looking for?
Send us work that is hard to decline. We want to accept your poems. We are happy when we open a document and find something which makes us applaud, laugh, cry, sing, dance or punch the air with triumph at your achievement. Please make our jobs easier by sending us poems to love, which make it impossible for us to click ‘decline’ or write ‘I’m sorry, but...’
Slants and themes
While we are always open to work on any subject that you are passionate about, for some issues we will be looking poems that fit a particular slant. This will always be included in the call-outs on our submissions page, which change for each issue.
New writers
We want to unleash new writers on the world, and to represent as wide a range of writers as our page count will allow, so please don’t be put off if you are previously unpublished. We are just as happy to see poems by brand new writersas we are those by poets whose work we have loved over many years.
Feature pitches
Send us your pitches for articles, essays, and reviews to be featured in future issues of Poetry Wales. This portal is open year round, and is checked monthly. We aim to respond to your submission within 8 weeks of the end of the month that you submitted.
We ask that you send us a pitch of no more than 300 words describing your piece. It helps us if you let us know what themes you intend to cover, how long you would need to complete the work, and any other information you think might be important in our decision-making. Remember that as a standard our feature pieces are between 2,000 - 3,000 words long; please pitch us something that you can make shine in that word count.
